We are sharing an important update regarding the opening of our new baseball facility and the schedule for the upcoming home games.
As many of you know, we have been eagerly anticipating the debut of our brand-new field this spring. However, our priority remains the safety of our student-athletes and the long-term integrity of the playing surface. Last summer, shortly after the initial seeding, a significant rain event caused erosion that resulted in some patchy areas throughout the outfield. While we have reseeded those sections, the unseasonably cool spring temperatures have not yet provided the warmth necessary for the new grass to establish the strong root system required for safe play.
We are currently working closely with local experts to ensure the outfield is ready for high-level play. To allow the outfield the necessary time to mature, we have decided to delay the opening of the new facility until the first week of June.
Please note that this update applies to the baseball field only. Our new all-turf softball field is in excellent condition and fully ready for action. All softball games will proceed as scheduled on the new field.
For our baseball families, please note the following adjustments for May:
Varsity Baseball: For the first two home games in May we will swap "Home" and "Away" designations with our opponents. These games will now be played at the opposing team's sites. Dates for these games are: May 20 (Sioux City West), May 26 (Abraham Lincoln)
JVR & JV Baseball: These games will proceed as scheduled but will be played on our old baseball field.
Harlan Baseball on Friday, May 29 – location to be determined.
Softball: No changes. All games will be played as scheduled on the new turf field.
Important Information for Games at the Old Baseball Field: Because we are in the final stages of transitioning to our new facilities, the old field has limited amenities. Please keep the following in mind if you are attending Freshman or JV games:
Seating: There are currently no bleachers at the old field, as they have been moved to the new facility. Fans will need to bring their own lawn chairs.
Concessions: The old concession stand has been dismantled. Concessions will not be available, so please plan to bring your own water and snacks.
We understand there is a great deal of excitement surrounding the new field. Allowing the baseball outfield this short window to stabilize will provide a safer environment for our players.
Thank you for your continued support of our baseball program and your patience as we put the finishing touches on this landmark project for our school.
