It is quite unbelievable the weather we have had in the past week.  With uncertainty of the weather right now, it is important to be aware of late starts, early outs and when school is cancelled due to weather.  Text messages, emails and phone calls are sent out through Infinite Campus.  You can also see the announcement on KTIV 4 as well as the Elementary Facebook page.  We do have winter gear available for students so if your child needs anything, please let their teacher or Mrs. Lindberg know.

Students do not go outside for recess in these dangerously cold temperatures.  We watch the temperature as well as the wind chill when determining indoor and outdoor recess.  As a guide we use the  Child Care Weather Watch chart from Iowa Child Care Resource and Referral.

Report cards will come home with students on Thursday.  Please check their orange takehome folder or backpack for an envelope with the report card.

We NEED wrapping paper!  On Thursday, January 18, we will be having an activity to continue building community throughout the elementary school.  For this activity we need your help!  We will be using wrapping paper so if you have any old, partially used, ugly, or just want to get rid of wrapping paper lying around your house, we will take it off your hands.  Please drop off at the office or send to school with your child by Thursday.  Watch Facebook following the 18th to see the activity that we did!!

The fifth grade students will have thier music program this Friday at 2:00 in the Elementary School gym.  The 5th grade band will perform first followed by the music program.  Doors will open at 1:30.

  • Third and fourth grade students will see the program on Friday morning and will not be dismissed for the 2:00 performance.  They can leave with you following the program.  Stop in the office when you arrive to put their name on the call out list and they will be called out and meet you in the lunchroom following the concert.

  • Fifth grade students may leave with their parents following the program.  They will be in the lunchroom at their lunch table.  Be sure to check with out with their teacher.

Did You Know?

Three times a year students are assessed on their reading fluency, reading comprehension and math skills?   FastBridge is the benchmark assessment program SB-L uses and it is administered each fall, winter, and spring.  Screening scores provide a data snapshot that is used to support identification of students who are at-risk and in need of intervetions and/or enrichment during WIN time.  The results are used to measure learning status and growth within the school year.  Students will be taking the winter assessments this Thursday, January 18.

Assessments:

  • aReading is a computer-administered adaptive screener that measures broad reading ability and predicts overall reading achievement.  Items target concepts of print, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary and comprehension.
  • AUTOreading is a computer-administered screener that assess accuracy and automaticity with phonics, spelling and vocabulary skills.
  • CBMreading is an assessment where students read aloud to an adult for one minute on three different passages.  CBMreading measures a student's proficiency in print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition and fluency.
  • aMath is a computer-administered adaptive screener that measures borad math abilities and predicts overall math achievement in counting, and cardinality; operations and algebraic thinking; number and operations in Base Ten; number and operations in fractions; measurement and data; and geometry.

(These may look familiar as they are the same standards students are measured on for math and appear on their report card and grade report.)

  • CBMmath Automaticity measures a student's fluency with arithmetic facts, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

5.   Breakfast is served from 7:45-8:10.  The bell rings at 8:10 and  school begins at 8:15.  Students are counted tardy if they are not in their classroom at 8:15.

6.  Winter  is here so it is time to start sending a coat, hat and gloves to school daily with your child as the temperatures fluctate from morning to afternoon and day to day.  When there is snow on the ground students will also need boots and snowpants.  If you need assistance getting any of these items for your child, please contact Mrs. Lindberg at lindbshe@sblschools.com.

7.   TeamMates Mentoring Program is open to students in grades 3-12.  Mentors are always needed to help make this program a success. If you or somebody you know is interested in being a mentor sign up  here.  If you would like to sign up your child to have a mentor contact Mrs. Lindberg.
