The weather is looking really nice for this week.  Hard to believe they are predicting we will be in the 50's.  The snow is nearly melted which means it is a muddy mess on the playground.  Continue to send boots with your child to wear outside so they do not have to wear wet shoes all day.  And then dry those boots out at night.  There is nothing worse than a locker area full of wet stinky boots!!

We have finished up winter testing and students are being placed into new WIN (Whatever I Need) intervention groups this next week.  We look at their fluency, accuracy, comprehension and math skills to determine what WIN group they will be in, if one is needed.  Students not in a WIN group go to an on-level group and work on writing, reading comprehension and math skills.  Starting today I will be attaching two weekly fluency passages (in one pdf document) that you can use at home to practice reading aloud with your child if they need to increase their fluency (reading rate when reading aloud).  These passages are located under the important links section at the bottom of this email.

This semester I am piloting a behavior matrix.  This matrix is for office managed referrals which steps through discipline progressions based on the behaviors.  The new matrix was introduced to staff this past week and will be shared with students in this coming week.  I wanted to put it in front of the parents in the event your child ends up in the office due to any of the behaviors listed on the matrix.  I don't want any of the consequences to be a surprise to parents or students.  These are for major behaviors that are sent to the office and only I will be assigning this level of consequences to students.  Teachers are not able to take away recess time as a consequence for disruptive behaviors in the classroom.  If your child is one who you know makes frequent visits to the office, you will want to go over this matrix with them at home.

Students had a great time enjoying a cup of hot chocolate and socializing with their friends on Friday.  Each grade level earned the reward for accumulating over 1500 points in Warrior Way tickets the month of January.  Each grade level surpassed this goal!  The new challenge begins tomorrow for February.  The end of month reward is still being planned with each grade having to earn 1200 points by the end of the month.

The 4th grade music program is this Friday at 2:00 in the Elementary School Gym.  The front doors will open at 1:30 and the program will be live streamed on the SB-L Website.  The 3rd and 5th grade students will watch the program that morning and will not be dismissed to watch the 2:00 performance.  You can however, take them with you when you leave.  Please stop in the office on your way in to put their name on the call out list (3rd & 5th only).  You will check out your 4th grade student with their teacher in the lunchroom where they will be waiting.

Did You Know:

  • Students at times are able to purchase seconds at lunch if there are extras.  Students must have money in their lunch account in order to purchase seconds.  This includes students who are on free lunches as the seconds do not fall under the free lunch guidelines.  The kitchen staff does an amazing job providing options for students daily.  Students get to choose items from the fruit and vegetable bar daily.

Weekly Reminders:

1.  Please notify the office if your student will be late or absent, by 8:45am.  If we do not receive a call, voicemail or email, then Mrs. Kloostra will call you.  We must account for all students absent from school.  Contact the office by email kloossus@sblschools.com or phone 712-943-5563 option 2.

2.  If your child is leaving early from school, they will not be called to the office until you arrive.  This way we keep them in class as long as possible in the event you are running late to pick them up.  Advance notice to the office will help us locate your student more quickly.  Coming 5 minutes early will also help get your child out the door on time when leaving early.

3.  If your child goes to The Warrior Y Club after school and will not be going on a given day, please call and let them know.  A reminder the Warrior Y Club will be closed on late start and early out days.

4.  At times seconds may be served during lunch.  Seconds and extra milk or milk with cold lunch is not covered under the free or reduced lunch program.  Students must have money in their accounts for those extra items.

5.  Breakfast is served from 7:45-8:10.  The bell rings at 8:10 and school begins at 8:15.  Students are counted tardy if they are not in their classroom at 8:15.

6.  Winter is here so it is time to start sending a coat, hat and gloves to school daily with your child as the temperatures fluctate from morning to afternoon and day to day.  When there is snow on the ground students will also need boots and snowpants.  If you need assistance getting any of these items for your child, please contact Mrs. Lindberg at lindbshe@sblschools.com.

7.  TeamMates Mentoring Program is open to students in grades 3-12.  Mentors are always needed to help make this program a success. If you or somebody you know is interested in being a mentor sign up here.  If you would like to sign up your child to have a mentor contact Mrs. Lindberg.
